Had bc surgery with SNB (2 nodes) and radiation in February and developed lymphedema two weeks later. I am in my eleventh week of 24/7 bandaging. I had been faithfully doing the Zuther exercises given to me on a sheet and saw your video recommended on breastcancer.org site. You have given me back my sanity! Plus I found out I was doing the exercises way to quickly--my therapist never said to go slowly. I visit you and your group daily then do Zuther for my second time of the day. I am uncoordinated and will never be a dancer so James (someone said on bc.org that he is really your brother??) makes me feel okay as he does not seem like a dancer either. I do enjoy the rhythm and music and try to have rhythm. I will be in a sleeve soon but will continue to visit daily. Have you consider other videos with different music for variety? I would certainly purchase them. Again THANK YOU! |

These videos are great. Exactly what I was looking for. I just did part 1 and 2. Simple, gentle but effective. I could feel the muscles working. I have bad OA in knees and Dr. said I need to keep moving and encourages this type of strengthening exercise. Thanks!

Columbia, Missouri Seniors Dance to Better Health
|  Jean Krampe knew that mobility and balance are two of the main reasons seniors fall, and she wanted to find a way to change these factors. Through her doctoral studies at MU's Sinclair School of Nursing, she found that dancing was becoming a popular therapy method. She landed on Healthy-Steps, a dance-based therapy and movement program. Although the program had been used to treat people with chronic illnesses, Krampe was the first to apply Healthy-Steps to people 65 and older and conduct studies on its effects. Her studies had positive results, showing that seniors would come to the activity and move during the sessions. Results also showed trends toward improving gait and balance. Krampe, now an assistant professor at St. Louis University School of Nursing, introduced Healthy-Steps to the residents of TigerPlace, an independent living facility in Columbia, as part of her dissertation project. "It's going to take a multitude of interventions to help reduce falls," Krampe said, "and this is one that may have some evidence going forward." Seniors reported they tremendously enjoyed the program, Krampe said. The results were so positive that the sessions are going to become a regular part of the activities at TigerPlace. describes how a routine procedure for the treatment of early breast cancer - the surgical removal of cancerous lymph nodes from the armpit - has been found unnecessary for many patients. The finding turns 100 years of standard medical practice on its head.
Q. From what I understand, removing even only one or two lymph nodes can result in chronic swelling of the arm. How certain is it that taking fewer nodes will result in a measurable reduction in the risk of developing lymphedema?

A. There is still a risk of lymphedema even after only a few nodes are taken for sentinel biopsy, but the risk is much lower than when many nodes are removed.

Chronic Disease and Healthy-Steps

Chronic disease impacts almost 90% of Americans over 65 years of age (the most expansive portion of our population), and is a significant cause of distress for those younger, as well. Fortunately, and as foundationajly developed, Healthy Steps minimizes the risk of complications associated with exercise and Chronic Illnesses. Chronic disease is classified as an infirmary lasting more than 3 months that cannot be prevented by vaccines or cured by medications or surgery, nor do they disappear. Chronic disease can often be controlled but not cured! Chronic diseases are associated with persistent and unremitting symptoms dependent on their etiology (cause), including, but not certainly limited to fatigue, wheezing, pain, coordination issues, and edema of all types. It can be associated with any bodily component: skeletal, body fluid and organ; it is categorized as a disease, disorder or injury and may be single system or multi-system based; it may be stable, worsening or improving but never resolving. Medical literature has demonstrated that appropriate exercise programs, such as in Healthy Steps, aides not only in the treatment of Chronic Illnesses, but on its prevention. Such programs can significantly impact the risk for cancer, cardiovascular disease and hypertension, pulmonary disease, arthritis and developmental skeletal disorders, fluid disorders, diseases of unknown etiology, obesity, and diabetes. Appropriate exercise, as modeled in the Healthy Steps Program, is associated with conditioned aerobics; warm up and cool down activities, movements that are associated with passive stretch, stabilized flow, slow and steady activities; tone based exercises, structured rest conditions and avoidance of trauma and avoidance of overuse conditions. In summary, Chronic Illnesses are becoming so frequent that it is changing our population pool for all exercise programs. Appropriate exercise for this population is critical both for prevention and treatment and Healthy Steps is such an appropriate program for all Chronic Illness patients. |

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - Being physically active while pregnant may help women gain a little bit less weight, according to a new review of recent research.
Pooling the results of 12 studies, researchers in Munich, Germany, found that women who exercised while pregnant gained an average of 1.3 fewer pounds than women who didn't.
That alone is probably not much of an incentive for women who are considering exercising while pregnant, but there are other reasons to do it, said Dr. Michael Kramer of McGill University in Montreal who reviewed the findings for Reuters Health.
Research shows that exercise can have positive effects on mood and insulin sensitivity in people overall, and appears to have no negative effects on women during pregnancy, noted Kramer, who is also scientific director of the Institute of Human Development, Child and Youth Health at the Canadian Institutes of Health Research.
Exercise can also help women maintain their pre-pregnancy conditioning.
"Women who have been physically active can continue, and women who haven't can start," Kramer said. "But they shouldn't expect major outcomes for them or their baby."

Weightlifting and Lymphedema Debate Continues

Many breast cancer survivors worry that excessive arm use will lead to lymphedema, or swelling caused by a buildup of lymph fluid. As a result, many eschew resistance exercise-or opt for lifting very light weights. However, recent research suggests that resistance training may not necessarily lead to arm swelling. Published in The Journal of the American Medical Association (2010; 304 [24], 2699-2705), the study included 154 breast cancer survivors 1-5 years post unilateral breast cancer-134 of whom completed the follow-up. Each participant had had at least two lymph nodes removed and presented with no signs of breast cancer-related with no sign of breast cancer-related lympheda. The subjects were split into two groups; a supervised, slowly progressive resistance exercise group and a non-exercise control group. Those in the exercise group met with personal trainers twice weekly for 13 weeks and then exercised unsupervised for the remainder of the year. They performed 3 sets of 10 repetitions of upper-and lower-body movements using dumbbells or resistance machines. The level of resistance was increased by the "smallest amount possible" after two sessions with no change in arm symptoms. At the end of the intervention, "clinically significant" arm swelling proved less common in the exercise group (8 of 72) than in the control group (13-75). "the findings of our study remove concerns that slowly progressive weight lifting will increase risk of lymphedema onset in breast cancer survivors." Sherry Lebed Davis, president of Healthy-Steps (TM) and herself a breast cancer survivor, was excited about these results. When the study was released, she enlisted the help of a personal trainer and physical therapist who was very knowledgeable about lymphedema. However, Davis's outcome did not mirror the study's generally positive results. "We found that I could not do many repetitions at all, and I was unable to lift more than 15 to 20 pound weights before my arm began to swell." Despite her experience, Davis believes that some survivors can successfully participate in a resistance exercise protocol. "It is very individual, and weightlifting must be started in moderation at a very low, slow pace," she says. "Many men and women with lymphedema will be very successful, while others-like me-will not. As a person living with lymphedema, I do everything: I golf, ski, kayak, bowl, dance my heart out, but I always monitor my body."

Here's another addition to the long list of the benefits of exercise. Researchers at the Siteman Cancer Center at Washington University School of Medicine and Barnes Jewish Hospital in St Louis have found that colon cancer patients who exerciesed regularly were less likely to die from the deisease. The data, gleaned from the American Cancer Society Prevention Study II, involved more that 150,000 men and women. "We examined the association of 10-15 year change in physical activity with risk of colon cancer incidence and mortality in the Cancer Prevention Study II," the authors said. " Those consistently at or about median physical activity levels over 15 years had half the risk of colon cancer death [compared with] those consistently below the median." |
