Quote from Therapist about Training: |
|
 |
| I have had a fabulous time learning this fantastic method of incorporating dance, music and exercise as a means of recovery or as a means of maintaining fitness at a level every person can manage. I have never seen anything like it. I am grateful for the encouragement received because it does take a lot to step out of the box once in a while and try something new in front of others.

Let us all take that concept and remember it every time someone steps into our classroom for the first time, and every time after that. Each class is a new beginning for someone.

| The link between poor sleep and weight gain! |
|
|
Lack of sleep, or a poor quality of sleep, is directly linked to an increase of body's production of a hunger hormone called Ghrelin. Ghrelin not only makes you overeat, but it also makes you gain weight by lowering the amount of calories you burn. The only way to reduce Ghrelin by some sound and deep sleep. Once rested, your appetite will normalize and this will help you stay fit and slim.

| Information for Seniors - Two scientific reasons for joining Healthy-Steps |
|
|
Reason 1: The average 75 year old suffers from three chronic medical conditions and takes five prescription medicines. Among those over 65, most suffer from hypertension; more than 2/3 are overweight; and nearly 20% have diabetes, which ripples the chance of developing heart disease (Ratey 2008) it has become essential that people make purposeful choices in order to live through their golden years with a healthy body and mind. Healthy-Steps can help seniors in so many ways. If you are looking for a Healthy-Steps class in your area, just go to our website: www.gohealthysteps.com, click 'find a class', and enter your zip code, it is that easy. Or you can purchase our DVD "The Lebed Method, Focus on Healing" from our Healthy-Steps store. Reason 2: It seems logical that if scientists have been able to connect lifestyle choices with brain health, physical exercise would be a positive option. Neuroscientists (Nussbaum 2006; Abbott et al. 2004; Verghese et al. 2003) recommend swimming, DANCING, gardening, knitting, more frequent use of the no dominant hand and leg, walking 10,000 steps a day. Small (2006) Does this sound like Healthy-Steps? Find a class in your area and join us! |

The impact of breast cancer among Canadian women: disability and productivity.

Authors: Quinlan E, Thomas-MacLean R,

University of Saskatchewan, Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada
Each year over 20,000 Canadian women are diagnosed with breast cancer. Many breast cancer survivors anticipate a considerable number of years of potential participation in the paid labour market, therefore, the link between breast cancer survivorship and productivity deserves serious consideration. The hypothesis guiding this study is that arm morbidities such as lymphedema, pain, and range of motion limitations are important explanatory variables in survivors' loss of productivity. The study draws from a larger longitudinal research project involving over 600 breast cancer survivors in four geographical locations across Canada. The study's regression results indicate that, after adjusting for fatigue, breast cancer stage, and geographical location, survivors with range of motion limitations and arm pain are more than two and half times as likely to lose some productivity capacity as compared to counterparts with no arm morbidity. The findings make a compelling argument for the necessity of adequate rehabilitation programs delivered at crucial times in breast cancer survivors' recovery. The study's unexpected finding that geographical location is a highly significant predictor of changes in productivity among breast cancer survivors is interpreted as a factor of the regulatory framework governing employment relationships in the four different jurisdictions. | MESSAGE FROM JUZO |
New Lymphedema Legislation has been recently introduced.
A bill has been recently introduced that would require Medicare to cover the cost of compression garments and Lymphedema treatment. The goal of the bill is to expand patient care reducing infections and disabilities, which would minimize health care costs. We urge all readers to get involved now by going to our Juzo USA website to fill out the Lymphedema Support sample letter and contact your local representative.
Juzo and Healthy-Steps are partners dedicated to educating and helping patients on the prevention and management of Lymphedema. For over 100 years our family company has manufactured compression therapy garments. Our products help restore the freedom to maintain active lifestyles, and make day-to-day living more enjoyable. We offer patients with Lymphedema a full range of arm sleeves and gauntlets in a variety of styles and colors.

| Important Facts and Statistics |
A RECENT STUDY AT THE FRED HUTCHINSON CANCER RESEARCH CENTER Found that women who exercise early in the day were 70% less likely to have trouble sleeping than those who exercised later in the day. Exercising at night speeds metabolism and releases nerve-stimulating hormones, keeping you awake. Getting an early workout will re-set your body's clock and regulate your sleep-wake cycle. Workout in the morning and sleep better at night!

A CENTER FOR DISEASE CONTROL AND PREVENTION IMPORTANT FACTS AND STATISTICS
According the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC 2009) by 2030 the portion of the US population aged 65 and older will double to about 71 million. The growing number of older Americans will put unique demands on public health, ageing services and the nation's health care system. The CDC suggests that chronic disease, such as, cardiovascular disease, stroke, cancer and diabetes, place a profound health and economic burden on older adults, owing to associated long term illness, diminished quality of life and greater healthcare costs.
Healthy-Steps program is one that all Seniors can do with no harm and only wonderful results to increase your quality of life, range of motion, flexibility, balance, coordination and more.

I can prepare these Raw cacao treats in a nano second, perfect for when friends drop by or I am off to a potluck with no prep time available.
INGREDIENTS:
A handful of dates, A handful of raw walnuts, pecans or any other nuts. 1 T. raw cacao 1 T. raw agave nectar shredded coconut
For a good squidgy consistency I recommend an overall blend of 60% dates to 40% walnuts.
1. Blend the agave nectar with the pitted dates in a blender until they form a smooth paste. Add 1 T. of orange juice if the mixture is too dry to help the blending process. 2. Use a coffee grinder or a good blender to grind the walnuts. 3. Add the walnuts and some cacao to the agave-date mixture and blend for another 30 seconds. 4. Tip the crumbly mixture and the raw cacao into a bowl, large enough that you can get your hands in, and squeeze the mixture into balls. 5. Roll in coconut.
That's it, you're done!
|
For added sophistication if you have a little extra time, add some finely grated orange zest and a drift of cinnamon powder. Ideal companion for travellers as those do not need refregiration and a great energy boost.
Contrary to popular opinion, cacao is a poor source of caffeine. A typical sample of cacao nibs or cacao beans will yield anywhere from zero caffeine to 1,000 parts per million of caffeine (less than 1/20th of the caffeine present in coffee). Cacao contains the highest concentration of antioxidants of any food in the world. These antioxidants include polyphenols, catechins, and epicatechins. By weight, Cacao has more antioxidants than red wine, blueberries, acai, pomegranates, and goji berries COMBINED.
Enjoy!
