Participant Testimonials
Suzi Beatie, facilitator The Marin Lymphedema Information & Support Group
The Marin Lymphedema Information & Support Group had a great evening with Valerie. She focuses on the healing techniques using the Lebed method of movement along with some of her own moves derived from her vast professional dance experience. Everyone had fun while increasing their flexibility, balance and strength following Valerie's dance style motions to her great music. Her sweet voice is encouraging as she guides you though the motions and you feel completely invigorated at the end of the session. We would highly recommend this, not only for cancer survivors and Lymphedema patients but for everyone who simply wants to enhance their lives in a healthful yet very joyful way.

Just thought I would share my little triumph with you Julia. I began training on the 1st and 2nd December, and during the week following I practised daily the opening lymphatic exercises, sometimes twice a day, and on the following Friday, the 7th December, I opened my bra while undressing, without thinking. I had actually put my hands round and unhooked it from the back. This was the first time I had been able to do so since I was diaganosed with Rheumatoid Arthritis last April. Sounds like a small thing but to me it was a giant leap forward. I passed my exam on the 8th December, 2007 and I can still unhook it by myself.

Here's to thriving and elegance!! L from Oregon
I say a huge THANK YOU for The Lebed Method. What a difference I've noticed with energy and enthusiasm; I can actually feel more flowing happening. It was so incredible to me that I have my three children join me for the first fifteen minutes two-three times per week. My husband also joins us when possible and has commented on noticing a difference in how he feels.
For weeks after doing the exercises tears flowed. I'm not sure why exactly, but trust that the tears were a necessary part of my wellness journey. My system needs your exercises and I am SO grateful for them.
Oh, to have had such exercises and information years ago!
I was thrilled to hear that pregnant women are beginning to learn about The Lebed Method and are doing the exercises. I haven't felt really "well"
since my first pregnancy twelve years ago. My story is one of pathological engorgement after the birth of my babies, followed by recurrent mastitis throughout my ten years of breastfeeding three children. While pondering how The Lebed Method might have helped me during that season of life, I estimated that I had mastitis (breast infections) close to one hundred times. Add plugged ducts in there, too, and it was not the "natural" experience I thought it would be, nor the thoroughly enjoyable experience I was told it would be.
With the support of my husband, I was able to continue nursing each baby through each painful bout. In our quest to stop mastitis from occurring, or at least lessen its frequency, I tried antibiotics, diet changes, various dietary supplements, specially fitted, made-for-me nursing bras, wearing no bra at all, changing from typical deodorants to a deodorant stone, classical homeopathy, herbal tinctures and teas, massage, talking with La Leche League leaders, and appointments with: lactation consultants (IBCLCs), a Naturopathic Physician, a classical Homeopath, and my midwife. Lastly, somehow I stumbled upon manual lymph drainage (MLD).
While all of the above seemed to help to some extent, I found the manual lymph drainage (Dr. Vodder's
method) to be the most beneficial. I was blessed to have a certified practitioner who was able to adapt what she usually did to what my body needed. If only I had known about it at the beginning instead of finding out about it with my third child! Also, during and following the weaning process of my third child, I noticed at times that my arms would occasionally feel full. Manual lymph drainage relieved that, too.
At this time I am not pregnant or nursing, but I still do not feel 100%. Thus, I went back to the MLD practitioner because she is also a licensed massage therapist. I feel like I'm in a renewing, refreshing, restoring, regenerating, replenishing season now and knew she'd be respectful and understanding, as well as helpful with massage and MLD. She now loans "The Lebed Method, Focus on Healing Through Therapeutic Exercise and Movement" DVD to interested clients. I borrowed the DVD about six weeks ago and have been amazed at how much better I feel mentally, emotionally, and physically. I bought a copy of it from her so my family and I can regularly do the exercises.
I appreciate the emphasis you put on proper posture.
After my season of pregnancies, breastfeeding, and lots of baby carrying/wearing, I noticed a tendency for my shoulders to be rounded forward and that my arms, neck, shoulders, and back hurt. I have been making a conscious effort to stretch my upper body and to pay attention to my posture. Your exercises help in that endeavor.
PLEASE consider getting your message to breastfeeding women, in addition to as many pregnant women as possible. Women who experience recurrent mastitis and/or plugged ducts need to know about these exercises that may help relieve their symptoms so they can continue to breastfeed their babies without, or with less, pain and suffering. Women who simply don't feel well after a pregnancy, though nothing specific can be pinpointed, may be helped with these exercises, too, just as I have been.
Exercise has been an important part of my life since childhood, but because of how my pregnancies, postpartum periods, and breastfeeding years were, I have not been able to keep an ongoing exercise routine. Your therapeutic exercises are perfect - gentle and not too taxing. Oh, to have had your DVD years ago!
About the DVD: wonderful, encouraging, enthusiastic, real, inspiring, happy, cheerful, supportive, peppy music (love the drums), fun, bright, a celebration, respectful of individuals' abilities and honoring to the human body. The participants look like great people to know, victorious, handsome, beautiful.
Your slogan, "Surviving is Important, but Thriving is Elegant" is especially touching to me. The years I described above felt like we were in "survival mode,"
and that is exactly how my husband and I have referred to those years. We are ready to THRIVE!
Now you know some of my story and how I came upon The Lebed Method. Thanks a million for your piece to our journey's puzzle. I will continue to let others know about The Lebed Method. May God richly bless you and guide you as you do this important work.

National Multiple Sclerosis Society. Greater Washington Chapter
"We have been thrilled with the results, both physically and mentally. Personally, Dr. Huddlestone and I appreciate those benefits, as well as the increased collaboration between the Society and our MS Center. We believe that one of the unique aspects of our MS center, that sets us apart, is our commitment to the overall health and well-being of our patients. By providing services such as PT/OT, Dr., Nurse, Social Worker, education, etc., we are taking care of the WHOLE person.
I have talked with the people attending the class on several occasions and I have attended one of the classes and participated in the exercises. Patients are all smiles and the morale is high. It was pouring rain the night I attended and two people had walkers and one woman in a wheelchair, and they came anyway. Of course the room was packed, but I thought that it was remarkable that the weather did not deter people with mobility issues; the class's allure was too strong.
People inside the class report increased flexibility and stamina and well as a sense of fellowship with the other people with MS. The music is upbeat and fun and there is a lot of laughter. One woman proclaimed that she had only recently been able to do the exercises standing, but for several years before, spent most of her life sitting down. While they exercise they are personally encouraged by name as well as taught about the benefits of each of the movements that they are performing. A few different people have mentioned that they have not participated in other programs because of finances, and they were "grateful" to the MS Society for their "gift". Others mentioned they were glad to learn and work out with someone who "knows what they are talking about", referring to Anne's credentials.
I would encourage you to personally attend a class if you are able, to see for yourself, the participants will sing its praises even more convincingly than I can.
Megan"

Trudi Jubb, SURVIVOR/ CA
I was diagnosed with Breast Cancer in May 2006. It turns out that I had TWO different forms of it - Inflammatory Breast Cancer (IBC) on one side and, for lack of a better word, "regular" Breast Cancer on the other side. My prognosis was poor, to say the least. The cancer was classified as 3B - it was found on the IBC side in 12 out of 12 lymph nodes. I've had some difficult times in the past year. Aside from the cancer itself, a bilateral mastectomy, chemotherapy, radiation and surgeries for port insertions, I had collapsed lungs after surgeries for the ports and a terrible skin reaction to the radiation treatments - in fact, it was the worst reaction my doctors and nurses had ever seen! Leave it to me - I'm a "beat the odds" sort of gal (except for the Lottery, of course!)
I'm writing to you because of the Lebed Method and what it has done for me. After my bad reaction to the radiation, I could barely move my upper torso and ended up with frozen shoulders. I started attending the classes - The Lebed Method: Focus on Healing - that The Cancer Center of Riverside offers when I realized I had a problem. I now have full range of motion of both shoulders. Almost as important - if not MORE important - as the physical advantages of the classes is the sisterhood I now have with everyone who goes to them. I wish I would have gone during my treatments. The love and support I receive from my "sisters" - women who have gone through and are going through what I have experienced - has helped me face Breast Cancer with dignity and a SMILE! The nurses and my sisters are my weekly "backbone" to cope with this disease. I can't leave the classes without a smile and an all around good feeling - not the least of which is that I am doing something physical and mentally that is PERFECT for me. Unlike going to a gym, the Lebed Method focuses on mending for ME!
Sherry Lebed Davis and her brothers have provided an invaluable resource for Breast Cancer patients at every stage of their diagnosis. I know that the Lebed Method is worldwide, but I would like to see it get National attention. I didn't know about it until I physically needed it. I wish I would have gone to the classes sooner, so I could have mentally coped as well as I have physically since I started going.
Thank you so much for your time.

I purchased your DVD for Lymphedema exercise, and I do not think I can thank you enough. It is fun, and the exercise help my Lymphedema enormously, and I no longer feel pain nor numbness in my arms, hands, and back. I liked it so much, I recommended the purchase to our Breast Cancer Center's Library located in Princeton YWCA. Thank you so much for your kind email, and the recommendation. With sincerest thanks to what you and your group had done for us suffering with Lymphedema.

Just wanted to tell you again how much I have enjoyed the DVD you gave me. I was pleasantly surprised to see that it was not the usual glitzy Jane Fonda sort of thing, but ordinary people with various handicaps who were trying to improve their bodies in one way or another.
I think that these exercises may greatly improve my balance and possibly even help me lose weight, she said hopefully!

Because I had so many lymph nodes removed due to the cancer treatment I did some research on what type of exercise might be appropriate. I came across the Lebed Method (http://www.focusonhealing.net/) and thought it would be helpful, but couldn't imagine anyone in the area would be offering it. Lo and behold within a couple weeks I found out about Lily's yoga class that incorporates the Lebed method! I have been to weekly classes and have found them quite wonderful. My hustle/bustle life glides to a serene stop in Lily's class. Her positive spirit (and the fun music) infuses the class with quiet energy. I highly recommend this experience to other women looking for gentle stretching in a healing environment. Two thumbs up!

"As a physical therapist, I know the importance of moving well to prevent or improve lymphedema, frozen shoulders, and more. As a breast cancer "struggler" with rheumatoid arthritis, I am gleaning the benefits of Lily's expertise. The class is wonderful in terms of the systematic movement it encourages, but also the support and fun we have. It is a great encouragement to me as I go along this journey, and I am very grateful to Lily for doing this class especially for us."

Lily's Lebed class for breast cancer patients is definitely one of the highlights of my week. My mood is lifted immediately as I enter the studio and by the time I leave I feel so much better -- physically, mentally and spiritually. Lily is extremely knowledgeable re: our physical conditions, strengths, and limitations. Realizing that we are all individuals, she encourages us to listen to our own bodies and to realize that we are not being judged. The class has turned out to be an A-ONE support group. Meeting new friends, exchanging info, and most of all, laughing makes the time go by much too quickly. Fortunately, we know that Lily will be there once again for us next week (and before that if we need her!)

The Lebed Method is a healing experience for my body and spirit. Being with other cancer survivors in the focus on healing and well-being is such a positive experience. The camaraderie, positive energy and support found in this yoga class I have yet to experience elsewhere. Many cancer survivors find it difficult to talk about the experience of fighting cancer. In the Lebed Method class participants work as individuals in a group healing environment that requires no words only to show-up.

I truly have made wonderful strides in my ability to move my arms that I thought I had lost from my multiple surgeries. Yes, you made me stretch things that hadn't moved in years. Actually , you only showed me how to do the exercises but made the experience so that it was one that I wanted to keep coming back to reinforce the gains I was making. The program is just amazing but your so very positive outlook and praise is what makes the Lebed program successful. We all need that very positive loving concern you give as well as the method to strengthen our bodies and our minds.

Subject: WHAT ARE THE REASONS FOR WANTING TO TEACH TLM?
It is a fun way to accomplish what I want my patients to do - facilitate the lymphatics to help reduce edema - with the added benefit of a support group in a very positive environment. Who knew you could have it all - and have fun doing it?!! Our treatments, Combined Decongestive Therapy, are very intense and demanding of the patients. Making the exercise portion of it enjoyable significantly increases the chances that they will be done. We started using the opening exercises on Monday right after our weekend course. Everybody loves it, from those in their 40's to 80 plus!! One lady even does it at home without the music! Getting folks excited about exercising and improving their health is important to me. Until now I just didn't have a great method to accomplish that. But NOW I DO!!
As a side note, we are using this with cancer pts: breast, metastasis disease; a fellow and lady with chronic venous insufficiency, edema, wounds and poor balance; a couple women with lipo-lymphedema and obesity, a burn (neck and upper chest) victim with restricted motion just to name a few.
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR DEVELOPING THIS PROGRAM, SHERRY! WHAT A BLESSING TO SO MANY!!
warm regards,
Kathy Fleming, PT, CLT-LANA, and now CLM, CLL !!!!

The Lebed Method is a unique exercise program centered on the re-education of the body by therapeutic movement and based on the principles of traditional physiotherapy and dance with the goal of helping participants recover physical and psychological health.
The patients at l'Auberge Mgr. Henri Cormier benefit from weekly sessions of the Lebed Method. Dance, music and props allow the participants to laugh and unwind.
We warmly invite caregivers to participate with their patients. The first month of sessions was an unparalleled success. A huge thank-you to sister Aldora and the whole team who made this project possible!

When I had my mastectomy nobody mentioned the other problems that could ensue. I understand that the biggest concern is the return of cancer but while I never had the problem of Lymphedema I did suffer from dropped shoulder and curved back.
It wasn't until I learned of Lebed exercises that I realized I could correct this problem and at the same time bolster my self esteem. Without this knowledge who knows what my posture would have ended up like.

Just wanted to let you know who and what helped me through my cancer treatment. I am a Lebed Method Instructor and love teaching the program and bringing it to those who need this the most. Since my recent diagnosis of breast cancer, this past year, I learned full well that friends, family and the exercises in the Lebed Method got me physically, emotionally and spiritually back to health and my full life again.
I am also a dance and pilates instructor and I have to say the Lebed Method lymphatic opening , followed with the exercises got me back to my full range of motion in my arms and upper body, more than any of my Pilates exercises, especially in the beginning. So within 3 months time I was back to teaching my full schedule of dance and pilates classes again. Sherry's program as well as her commitment to her instructors and students is so incredible, I feel blessed to be part of this wonderful organization.
Sincerely,

As a cancer survivor myself, I
can attest the tremendous impact that program has on my life. Last
year, after extensive chemo- and radiotherapy I was left extremely
week and major incapacitated. And even though I was thankful to be
alive, I needed my strength back. I was looking for the program that
would help me. The Lebed method group really did wonders for me.
Thanks to the care of the instructor who works so hard with each and
every participant to suite their needs and encourage even smallest
improvement. Thanks to the extreme generosity of sponsors that made
this program possible. I am now gaining my strength back. With this
letter I would like to express my deep gratitude to everyone involved
in creation, support and running of this program.

First of all, I want to express my appreciation to those responsible
for having created this wonderful program. Most of us who attend are
seniors with chronic health conditions and/or cancer survivors with a
low level of energy and endurance. The benefits we receive from the
class are enormous!! Personally, since joining the class, I have experienced more mobility, an increase of energy, a reduction of pain and a general feeling of well being.

From: Pamela Cereghino
As an adult, I always aspired to retain an active lifestyle. At around 35, my family took up skiing, and we leaped in whole-heartedly, every weekend, every vacation (including summers). Before that, it was hiking and running around Greenlake. At around 39 or 40, I began experiencing bizarre sometimes debilitating symptoms; to make a long story short, it turned out to be Multiple Sclerosis.
I am now 51 and my activity level has decreased substantially due to the extreme fatigue that I experience daily. Cardio active exercise leaves me weak to the point that I can hardly walk. Letting go of the active lifestyle that I once shared with my husband, family and friends has affected me physically, psychologically and spiritually.
The Focus On Healing class that EpiCenter offers has given me a vehicle to move my body and re-discover my physical self. This class has patience (and chairs to lean on) and gives me the opportunity to listen to my body and understand how it reacts to each movement. Focus On Healing is a source of pleasure and joy via awesome music for us to move to and the instructor's (Claudia) personal spirit that is conveyed to each and every one of us. This class has turned out to be a new beginning for me and I cherish new beginnings! I am deeply appreciative to EpiCenter for offering this extraordinary, effective, valuable and beneficial course!
Due to the limited amount of cardio exercise that I can tolerate, I am one who has not joined your club but I speak highly of EpiCenter and refer it to people regularly. I am also aware that many people who originated with this class and do not have limitations on how they exercise are now members of EpiCenter. I am also aware that some class attendees have referred members of their family to the club and they are now members. Many attending the class are senior citizens - some well into their 80's and even 90 years old. For them, this class is an activity that is healthful and something to look forward to a couple days a week. I believe the Focus On Healing Class is a wonderful and meaningful opportunity that EpiCenter is offering to the community! Thank You!!
Truly and Sincerely,

Just a note of appreciation for your allowing the class,
"Focus on Healing", to continue at The Epicenter. Almost
two years ago, I began the class after having surgery,
Chemo and radiation. Sadly, the person who encouraged me
to take the class, passed away just before Christmas. She
struggled during the last couple of months of her life.
However, she still pushed herself during that time to
attend two or three more classes. Until then, life was a
little better for her and she attended regularly. Because
of her I believe some of her family members have joined
the club. I am also aware of others from our class who
have joined.
The class has been of great benefit to me. Due to my
surgery I developed Lymphodema in my arm. Claudia is an
excellent trainer. She is so knowledgeable about this
condition and so caring about the needs of all of us.
Starting the class, I was feeling a little unsure of
myself. Could I do these exercises? Could I even finish an
hour class? Two years later at almost 81 years of age, I
am feeling stronger and healthier than before surgery. At
my age, it would be difficult for me to do more than these
two classes weekly.
Claudia is always there making the class fun and always
with encouraging words. My thanks to Claudia and to you
and to The EpiCenter.
Happy New Year from a very grateful,
Priscilla

Subject: Thanks
Dear Friends,
Tomorrow will be the final class of my first session using the Lebed Method at Loma Linda Breast Cancer Institute. Tammy and Lisa, our instructors, are dear, dear people. Thanks to them--and to you--life is looking sweeter.
While my breast cancer surgeon has insisted since 2003 that my lymph dissection did not give me lymphedema, I have always had symptoms of pain, stiffness and swelling in my left arm. I have cared for myself "as if" I had lymphedema--just in case. Your method of gentle, rhythmic movement to music (while smiling) has strengthened my arm, decreased the periodic swelling, diminished episodes of pain and given my self-confidence a boost. As a survivor (thriver) of uterine (1995) and breast (2003) cancers, I'm still working toward a restored feminine self-image. But with the next session of The Lebed Method coming up in July, I expect improvement there, too.
Thank you. And all God's best to you.

My name is Carol. I have been diagnosed with MS. One of the physical problems associated with this disease, is weakening of the muscles.
The following is a list of items that I have noticed since using the LeBed Method
- After one session I was feeling much better and able to lift my arm past my shoulder.
- After two sessions I had even better improvement
- After five sessions, I notice how strong I had become. People who know me also noticed this as well as my doctor.
- The exercises were easy to do.
- The LeBed Method isn't like weight training; however you do get to the same point without the pain.
- The objective of the LeBed Method is to allow your breathing to control the amount of exertion that you put on your body.
- The Lebed Method is the best thing that has happened to me.
- I am thankful to the LeBed Family and to my trainer, Gwen Traylor
Sincerely yours,
Carol
